What Compliance Actually Requires

Insurance companies follow NFPA 1144 — the national standard for structure ignition. Here's what they're looking for on your property.

Zone 0 — Immediate Zone (0–5 ft)

Non-combustible materials only. No wood mulch, no dead vegetation, no combustible decking or fencing within 5 feet of the structure. We install fire mesh, replace wood skirting, and clear debris.

Zone 1 — Lean, Clean & Green (5–30 ft)

Vegetation spaced and pruned so fire can't ladder from ground to canopy. Dead material removed. We thin, limb, and clear this zone to spec.

Zone 2 — Reduced Fuel (30–100 ft)

Tree spacing of 10+ feet crown-to-crown. Ladder fuels removed. Slash piled or chipped. We handle the heavy equipment work — felling, chipping, haul-away.

Driveway & Access

Emergency vehicles need 12-ft clearance and 13.5-ft vertical clearance. We grade, widen, and maintain mountain driveways to meet access requirements.

Documentation

We provide a written scope of work and before/after photos you can submit directly to your insurer or county inspector.

Re-Inspection Ready

We coordinate with your timeline — whether you have a 30-day notice or a renewal deadline — and get the work done to pass.

Why It Matters Now

Insurers Are Dropping Mountain Properties

Since 2020, major carriers have non-renewed thousands of Colorado mountain homeowners for failing NFPA 1144 defensible space standards. Jefferson and Park County properties along the 285 corridor are among the most affected.

A non-compliance letter gives you a window — typically 30 to 90 days — to complete the work and submit documentation. We've helped dozens of Foothills homeowners meet that deadline and keep their coverage.
